Some of the VAWT windmills I've made. Video

A collection of VAWT ( vertical ) windmills I've put together over the last few years. The Lenz2 mill is driving a Fisher & Paykel washing machine motor modified to produce power.

WORLD RECORD: ...
WORLD RECORD: BIGGEST WIND TURBINE Visit: windturbinecarriedbywheels.weebly.com ZERO-NOISE ? from gears and generators since they're sealed underground. SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS since the turbines are slow-moving. DOES NOT NEED TO OCCUPY A WIDER LANDSCAPE since the turbine can be very tall. MAY BE LOWER-COST since it can use parts of junked trucks and others. ELUDES HURRICANE FORCE since the blades automatically close. HELPS THE WIND ENERGY COMPANIES since it is FREE FOR ALL.

I like your designs ...
I like your designs. Do you think Vertical turbines, could replace the current Propeller design in the? commercial market??

@glennl1965 LOL! ...
@glennl1965 LOL! I'LL FILE THAT ONE UNDER GOOD ADVICE. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS TO? YOU AND A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR. MUDDy

@muddymuddymuddmann ...
@muddymuddymuddmann Hi MUDDy. Sorry but I dont have a video of the cycloturbine from top down. Its no longer running, was pulled apart years ago. After building and testing it, I realised it was a novelty windmill, there are too many moving parts to make it a practical design. Tails on VAWT's is a step? backwards, you might as well build a more efficient HAWT windmill. Glenn

@glennl1965 I'VE ...
@glennl1965 I'VE SENT MANY PEOPLE TO YOUR SITE TO SEE THE VAWTS YOU MAKE. I AM IMPRESSED WITH THE LENS TURBINES AND THE ONE WITH THE TAIL FIN AND BLADE LINKAGE THAT CHANGES THE ANGLES OF THE BLADES IN PERSPECTIVE OF THEIR POSITIONS. IN OTHER WORDS I WANT ONE. ARE YOU GOING TO DO A VIDEO THAT SHOWS THIS ONE FROM THE TOP AS IT TURNS? SLOWLY, SO WE CAN SEE THE TIMING OR THE CAM IN ACTION? THANKS. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS! MUDDy

@mdctlew Yeah you ...
@mdctlew Yeah you can use a chain or gear drive to increase RPM, but there are some reliability and starting issues.?

@ ...
@muddymuddymuddmann? Thanks MUDDy

@IronHorsez88 The ...
@IronHorsez88 The bigger diameters means lower RPM, its the tip speed that governs that and it cant be avoided. But a bigger diameter also means more power, even if its at a? lower RPM.

I enjoy? watching ...
I enjoy? watching your videos. I built a Lenz2 in a low wind area. While I'm impressed that it turns in low winds It doesn't produce any usable power at that speed. The video is from before the alternator was attached. Is it reasonable to to increase the distance from the wing to the axle and use a chain drive or gear reduction to take advantage of torque in slower winds?

Awesome?
Awesome?

@IronHorsez88 Hi ...
@IronHorsez88 Hi IronHorse. Yes thats right, all things being equal, a larger diameter means lower RPM, and more power. Its to do with Tip Speed, or Tip Speed Ration (TSR). The ideal for a well designed turbine is 5 to 7, any lower or higher and you loose power. If you increase the diameter, and keep the same TSR, then the turbine will run slower. The tips of the big turbines are doing over 200kmh, you dont really? want them going any faster anyway.

Hey Glen, Nice ...
Hey Glen, Nice collection of wind toys. Nice wind mill also.? I have been looking at your site and ed"s for a long time now. It's good to see the VAWTs in action. MUDDy

It always seems ...
It always seems like the larger the radius? of the turbine, the slower it turns, is that because there is more opposing drag? How could you make a large, and fast turning turbine? Thanks for the videos

@glennl1965 thanx ...
@glennl1965 thanx for the response, I've seen the Lenz in action before and it seems very efficient I was wondering what's the? angle of the blades that you used for maximum efficiency. I was thinking of trying to put together a 1kw VAMT in a couple of months. and would adding 3 more blades be any help to the design?

@GreenEnergyToday ...
@GreenEnergyToday Hey,? its a hobby.

@CANNUCK72 Yeah the ...
@CANNUCK72 Yeah the Lenz is the? way to go, or the savinous.

@Pajes01 No, never ...
@Pajes01 No, never all at once. Only the Lenz was used to make? any usable power, 20 to 40 watts from memory

@POMPAYPEE The Lenz ...
@POMPAYPEE The Lenz is the best so far. Buts its also the biggest, not not really? very scientific.

In all the vawt ...
In all the vawt windmills you made, which? one is the most efficient and with the most torque?

Do you all of them ...
Do you all of them running at once? If so How much? do you pull?

I want ask you ...
I want ask you about first of yours windmill what are diameter of all the rods that you using build this windmill 1) main shaft 2) rod connecting? hub rotor with hinge on the blade 3) rod connecting axle 3 bearings with "edge hinge " 4) what is hight of blade ... 5) what is thickness blade I want build this type of windmill and i ask for something for the start

Which one did you ...
Which one did you have the most success with - it sounds like the Lenz? I want to build? a small wind turbine but the problem is this: my town banned windmills inside municipal limits a few years ago. I want to create a VAWT and make it a little more sculptural so that they will not complain. I would just like some direction before I start cutting materials!

Questions for you: ...
Questions for you: Are you aware of other renewable energy resources (AKA: alternate technologies) and have you analyzed the site for potential methods of energy exploitation? Are your expectations realistic, and are you designing for immediate consumption or for storage and consumption. Why limit the questions to either or and cost and? maintenance?

Yeah its a bit hard ...
Yeah its a bit hard to see. This video was my first, wont make? the same mistakes again.

i? dont think these ...
i? dont think these types can over speed like the propellor type things. dont take my word though i could be wrong
